Aftercare Advice

Clients may have many different reactions after receiving Bowen therapy including feeling energized, sleepy, sometimes some muscle soreness or feeling a little flat. I like to call this the Bowen hangover. Many clients have no negative reactions. However, if you do have a negative reaction try to understand that it is a good thing because it means your body is responding to the treatment, releasing toxins and that usually these reactions are only present the day after treatment or occasionally for a couple of days.

To Help Yourself

*  Drink water throughout the day.
* Take a couple of gentle fifteen minute walks to help move the lymphatic system.
*  Remember that the treatment keeps on working for approximately one week and that changes can be subtle.
*  Do not use any heat treatments directly on the body. For example: heat packs, electric blankets, deep heat and very hot showers. Electric blankets may be turned on to heat up the bed but then turned off before getting in.
*  Do not use other massage therapies while using Bowen Therapy. This will turn off the changes taking place in your body. Chiropractic treatments are best used before a Bowen Therapy treatment as they have a longer lasting result that way.

What to expect at a Bowen Therapy treatment

A Bowen Therapy session usually lasts between 45 minutes to 1 hour. In general you will be fully clothed for the treatment, and it is appropriate to wear light clothing such as a t-shirt and tracksuit pants. The treatment itself is made of small movements that stretch and roll the muscles, tendons and ligaments at specific points. Bowen Therapy is also designed to relax the nervous system. It is normal to feel relaxed during and after the treatment and to enjoy a great nights sleep that night.

The Bowen movements are gentle in nature but each one is placed specifically over muscle trigger points and designed to relax and rebalance your body. People’s reaction post treatment vary from energized to sometimes feeling sleepy. In general people comment that after one Bowen session they feel good, but after two they gain energy and feel great. For older or chronic injuries there may need to be more treatments.

It is recommended that two consecutive treatments are received one week apart. For most complaints two to four treatments are recommended. Bowen Therapy is not an ongoing therapy, however, many people continue to have Bowen Therapy once a month to prevent injury and maintain lower stress levels.

A little about Bowen...

The good news is that Bowen Therapy offers a gentle treatment that can help your body heal most muscle based problems such as backache, neck tension, headaches, frozen shoulder, tennis/golfer's elbow and much more. Bowen Therapy in some cases can also help address additional problems such as migraines and fibromyalgia.

Bowen Therapy can be used very effectively in conjuction with treatments such as Chiropractic. If you are using chiropractic treatments see your chiropractor first and then follow this up with a Bowen Therapy session.

Bowen Therapy works by rehydrating the fascia helping the body work much more efficiently at a cellular level. It relies on relaxing the nervous system for its effectiveness -  when the body is relaxed it is in a state to heal.

Because Bowen Therapy relieves muscular tension many people report that they feel lighter, balanced, have more vitality and just feel well in themselves. As Bowen is a gentle treatment it is safe to use on anyone from pregnant women to new born babies, the elderly and frail. Many people have realised that it does so much for the body holistically and use Bowen routinely as a total relaxation treatment.
